About Us

Software we use ourselves

Our name comes from “eating your own dog food”, a term popularized at Microsoft in the 1980s for using the software you build yourself.

We want to build software that people use in everyday life, across different backgrounds, devices, and circumstances. Using it ourselves is a starting point; making it work for other people takes listening to their needs.

How we build

Accessibility

People should be able to choose their language, colors, and level of motion, and use the input methods available to them. Those choices belong in the design from the start.

Reliability

A lost connection or an unavailable service should not stop someone’s work. Handling failures and recovering from them is part of building distributed software.

Sustainability

Local-first software reduces dependence on a running server. Sustainable pricing supports its upkeep, while Fair Source gives others a path to continue the work beyond its original author.

Products and consulting

Dogfood Software LLC develops its own products and offers after-hours software consulting.

Our first planned product is JustPets, a platform for pet-care businesses, their clients, and pet owners. We are planning a web app with companion Android and iOS apps.
